The Story

We are all born humans capable of thinking and feeling. Yet, we are surrounded by indifference, inequity, and illiteracy. But what if these are mere symptoms, and not real problems?
Today, as adults, how we think, feel, and express ourselves traces back to how we experienced the world as children.
A child begins to experience and shape their view of the world very early on, through two primary sources — home and school. Most of their time is spent in school engaging in a formal process where one is assessed on their ability to memorize and recall facts, with little room for creativity and discourse. Few children have access to activities that build them for the future and those that do have access, engage in "extra-curriculars".
So, we must ask ourselves, given the current reality of the world, has education truly succeeded in nurturing the humanity within children? And perhaps the deeper root of global challenges lies in how today’s adults once experienced their own childhood.
Imagine a different world — one driven by curiosity and empathy
A world where every child is learning about their surroundings through thinking deeply, questioning information, and practicing empathy. A world where every child can listen to different views with respect. Can we define this process as true education? If a child receives this kind of education, one can be certain that we will have a much more tolerant society in the decades and centuries to come.
This philosophy of education is Step2Words’ north star. We are building thinkers. To nurture true thinkers, we must first help children become great readers, who do more than recognize words on a page. They imagine, question, and connect with what they read. They listen to the voice of the author, yet bring their own thoughts and feelings into the story. A great reader reads with curiosity, empathy, and the courage to see the world through many perspectives.
Step2Words has taken up the challenge of working with children who may not yet recognize English letters or words, and guiding them to become strong readers and great thinkers, with the hope that we will live in an India where every child is literate, educated, and confident.
